Description:
Quilt; face made from white plain weave cotton squares 17” x 17”, backing made from pieced white plain weave cotton. Hand stitched and quilted in a geometric and floral design using white cotton thread (quilting stitches are about 9 spi). Handwritten accompanying note “Hand quilted in 1849 by Arvilla Jackson in Sushan, New York, for her wedding to Silas Allen Bailey in West Dummerston, Vermont.” The quilt well-illustrates the lingering taste for white cotton bed coverings, first fashionable in the early 19th century, by rural inhabitants of the Connecticut River Valley.
