Pair of brocaded shoes. Note inside claims that the shoes, along with their clogs, belonged to Great Sarah I, / Duchess of Marlboro. Shoe scholar June Swann thinks they post date this provenenance. These are perhaps the most well-made pair of women's shoes in Historic Deerfield's collection of 18th-century women's shoes. Clogs, which entered the collection at the same time, are smaller and therefore probably weren't originally worn with the shoes. These have therefore been given new numbers, HD 56.394.3 and .4. The shoes have a pointed toe (reinforced with leather) and fairly large, fabric-covered Louis heel (heel height is 1 3/4"). The pink ground of the brocade has faded. Row of stitching across breast equals 5 stitches per inch. Vamp and tongue lined with linen. The narrow latchets are lined with white leather, possibly kid. Leather insole and sole, the latter has been scored to aid in traction.
