Description:
Amulet in shape of a scarab (dung beetle). Base inscribed in hieroglyphs with throne name of King Amenhotep III, reading “Nebmaatre.” The text consists of a sun disk (for the god Re); a figure (sitting with knees drawn up) representing the Goddess Maat, shown with the ostrich feather of “truth” on her head and holding an ankh sign; and the basket-sign, Neb, at the bottom. Pierced for stringing. This scarab would have belonged to a private individual seeking good luck by invoking a powerful king’s name (Diana Larkin 2016).
