Description: Needlework sampler wrought by Polly Geary (1797-1883) of Hatfield, Massachusetts. Includes embroidered numbers 1 through 16,and the alphabet. The verse at the bottom is part of a poem or relfection on death, perhaps titled The Sun, or Sun-set and Sun-rise: "Contemplate when the sun declines/ Thy death with deep reflection/ And like again he rising shines/ Thy day of resurrection." "Polly Geary/ Aged 13/ Hatfield Sept 1 1810." Geary was born on Septeber 3, 1797 in Hatfield, Massachusetts, the daughter of Nathan (from Sterling, MA) and Martha Wait (from Hatfield) Geary. On March 21, 1821, Polly married Thaddeus Graves (1794-1831) of Hatfield. Polly Geary Graves died on March 12, 1883. Historic Deerfield also owns a later, rare photograph of the maker of this sampler (see 2015.29.2).
