Description: Baked beans have been a staple in the United States for generations, and the redware bean pot was a common item. Lead-glazed inside and out or only on the interior, with one, two or no handles, these squat round forms ranged in capacity from a pint to a gallon and came with matching covers. Also sometimes listed as "bean bakers" in potters' price lists. Squat, bulbous body with beaded lower edge to pot, swelled sides, straight flange on neck, strap handle attached to side, mouth is notched to fit a circular lid which does exist. Pot is covered entirely with a dark brown, manganese lead glaze which is very glossy. Cover is round with a squat, sunken, flat knob. Paper label attached to handle reads: in pen “ex col./ BN Gates” and on the reverse “Bean Pot/ ca. 1860-1910, Provenance/ unknown.” Formerly part of the Burton N. Gates Collection.
