Description:
Ralph Hall operated a pottery at Tunstall from 1822 to c. 1836, following which the firm was known as Ralph Hall & Son, and in 1841 as R. Hall & Co. Hall's most interesting products wre dark blue and white transfer printed plates and platters with floral borders, especially the "Select View Series," of which this is one. The factory also produced another series called "Picturesque Scenery." Large oval platter with wide, dished rim, shallow bouge, flat oval well; transfer printed under the glaze in cobalt blue enamel, the pattern consists of a border of stylized acanthus leaves, with an inner border of roses, fruit, and tulips, and the center scene is ringed in an oval cartouche of scrolls, the view is of a large group of buildings in the background with a river and fisherman in the foreground, the pattern name is printed in blue on the reverse, "R. Halls/ Select Views/ GYRN,/ FLINTSHIRE/WALES./Stone China." Impressed mark on back, "18". Marked in black paint, "#411" Gyrn Castle is a Grade II listed late Georgian Castle nestled in the heart of a conservation area in rural Flintshire, north Wales. One of 18 recorded patterns from Ralph Hall's 'Select Views' series. Good condition, small firing flaw on front of plate, and glazed over chip on back of rim.
