From the fall of 1959 through the early summer of 1960, daily protests were held in Tokyo to oppose the renewal of the United States-Japan Mutual Protection Treaty, popularly known as ANPO. Student demonstrators were joined on the streets by housewives and salaried workers, taxi drivers and hourly laborers. The focus of the protests was the National Diet Building, where the treaty was to be signed. On the night of November 27, 1959, students stormed the building only to be evicted by the riot police.
