Calculations determined that the year 1940 marked the 2,600th anniversary of the establishment of the imperial lineage, and the whole country was wrapped up in celebrations. In Tokyo temporary gates were set up around the Imperial Palace, and the city’s residents turned out to witness a variety of commemorative events.
