Description: A multitude of stars that glow in dark. Quote from Printed Matter's site: 'Thomson uses photoluminescent ink on rag paper to create a negative image of a starry sky, inspired by the remnant pages of glow-in-the-dark stars after the stickers have been removed.' The stars are invisible until the paper has absorbed light and then the room is darkened.
Label Text: Label text from “The Art of Collecting: Contemporary Prints from the Risa Gerrig Collection,” September 10 – October 12, 2014: Thomson uses photoluminescent ink to create a glowing green background, speckled with blacked out stars. The resulting effect resembles a photonegative view of a night sky, or a glow-in-the-dark sticker sheet after all the stars have been removed. This untraditional approach to the printed medium transforms the traditional setting of the gallery, taking the viewer from a well-lit museum space and placing them in the dark. The warm glow of light cast onto the viewer’s face when the work is viewed in a darkened room creates an intimate experience that emphasizes the physicality of the work. - Shelby Miner (B.A. ’15)
