Description: Venn Diagram with four overlapping circles each labeled either GOOD, EVIL, RICH or POOR charting personality traits of Disney Characters.
Label Text: Label text from “The Art of Collecting: Contemporary Prints from the Risa Gerrig Collection,” September 10 – October 12, 2014: This print is part of a series entitled Disney Color Code which explores and reveals the system of coloration used in Disney classics to represent their characters’ traits in binaries such as good and evil, rich and poor. Color Guide to Disney Books breaks down Disney’s saturated use of color, absorbing the sensory data and re-illustrating it in a logical and informative manner. The scientific use of a Venn diagram transforms the visual aesthetic into a cognitive new form. This rational understanding of color playfully recognizes the logicality and thoughtfulness present within the cartoons. - Felicia Bolaske (B.A. ‘14)
