Description:
Thrown, red earthenware ovoid-shaped container with flat base, turned foot, swelled sides, and narrowing, undercut neck, flared flange made to hold a lid, spout is pinched from the edge of the pot, attached strap handle, original circular cover with round knob handle in the center, top of lid is grooved, lid is held onto pot by an old linen string, the pot is splashed with manganese in a vertical pattern, inscribed on the base in black ink “Hartford/ 1907” And “From Mrs. Morgan” and in red paint, “36.”, and in pencil, “Hartford/ Conn.” Formerly part of the Burton N. Gates Collection. Original notecard from the Gates papers reads, "Covered pitcher./ Col. Hartford, Ct. (Gift of Mrs. R. A. Morgan) 1907. Red clay. Black splash decoration/ 7 1/4 in high." Current attribution provided by American ceramics scholar Justin Thomas, 1/16/2019.
