Description: Red earthenware flask with circular flat base, ovoid body with pinched sides, and narrow, short spout, on the shoulder of the flask is a separate seal of clay with serrated edges, seal is inscribed “James Towne/Collony Pottery/Jamestowne/Va.”, the flask is covered all over with manganese black lead glaze. Paul Grisenauer was the operator of James Towne Collony Pottery. In 1921, Paul Griesenauer became highly skilled at making bricks and pottery using the clay from the Piney Grove area, near Jamestown, Virginia. Griesenauer was a skilled pottery maker who experimented with various glaze treatments. James Towne Collony Pottery flourished at this time (1921-1930's). Griesenauer duplicated old pieces discovered during the Williamsburg and Jamestown excavations, re-introducing them with vibrant glaze work. The Jamestowne Collony Pottery papers are held at the Earl Gregg Swem Special Collections Library at William and Mary College.
