Label Text: Label text from “The Art of Collecting: Contemporary Prints from the Risa Gerrig Collection,” September 10 – October 12, 2014: This nineteenth century political cartoon marks an early acquisition for Richard Gerrig, as well as a unique collaboration with his sister Risa, in the act of collecting. Gerrig and his sister first encountered the work of Daumier in an exhibition including some of the artist’s prints during a visit on Risa’s birthday to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The collector was immediately drawn to the artist’s political sense of humor, and purchased this impression a month later. Gerrig’s emotional connection to the work is grounded in this special moment with his sister, to whom this collection is dedicated. - Felicia Bolaske (B.A. ‘14)
