Description: Thrown, bulbous jar of red earthenware with lead glaze, jar has wide mouth with lip for lid which is missing; narrow neck, swelling belly, tapering base, and flat base; neck of pot has two incised lines; surface of pot has spots and splotches of orange, green, and brown from discolorations in the body; object numbered "29" in red on underside of base; in ink inscribed " Col. 1905./ Worcester/ [flourish]" Condition: large section of top rim missing and other areas of chipping, hairline crack extending from the rim about 2 inches into the body; possible previous small repair to glaze at end of hairline crack, edge of base also has chipping; there is a glaze defect on the side of the pot; Originally part of the Burton N. Gates Collection. Notecard from the Gates' papers reads: " Jar./ Col. Worcester 1905. for cover, missing, Red clay: Spotted glaze/ with orange, brown, green etc. 8 in./ [in someone else's writing] Converted to lamp (beside TV) - note made 1965/ [back to Gates' writing] in use for present, BNG"
