Description: vertical ōban triptych; tate-e ōban triptych; sensō-e; nishiki-e
Label Text: Another edition of this design is held by the Boston MFA (2000.181a–c), which bears along the left margin of the left panel the publisher's mark of Matsunaga Sakujirō (active ca. 1894–1895, firm name Shōgetsudō), who published exclusively designs related to the Sino-Japanese War. Owing to significant differences in coloration (for example in the uniforms of the Chinese soldiers and in the clouds of smoke), this edition, like many others in this album, was likely published later, possibly following the end of the war, for inclusion in an album. In the absence of any surviving publishing marks on this impression an exact date cannot yet be identified. - BB, 2014
