Description:
off white blanket with woven in design of dark blue check in a windowpane pattern. A handwritten note on a piece of paper that accompanied the blanket indicates “Handwoven Blanket/ Blue checks./ Oxford, Mass/ June 1931_”. Repairs, darning, probably contemporary with the blanket’s earlier use. The blanket is made up of two selvage widths (each 32" wide) whip or overcast stitched at a center seam. Hemmed at top and bottom. Throughout, linen sewing thread. Stitched by hand. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, blankets were some of the most common types of bed coverings, as evidenced by probate inventories. They were often made of wool, and could be plain or patterned, the latter most often in a checked pattern of two or sometimes three colors.
