Description:
Rare slip decorated dish with inscription. Rectangular, drape molded redware loaf dish, coggled rim, shallow dish, decorated with white slip using a single quill slip cup, inscription reads: "United/ States" with flourishes. The underside of the dish was not glazed but there are some finger print marks of glaze remaining, an inscription in ink on the back side reads: "Col. 1908 by Van Dyke./ Wellfleet, Mass./ of Mrs. Nye." and in red paint the number "67" in a circle and an applied red seal " 321/AEE." Condition: Extremely poor condition, losses and previous restoration to slip decoration, coated on back with previous restoration/repair effort, significant issues with body flaking in sheets or layers, and is very fragile. Has been conserved. Origin: probably Norwalk, CT, 1825-1850. Presumed to be part of the Burton N. Gates Collection. A notecard in the Gates papers for this object reads: "67/ Platter./ Col. by Vandyke of Mrs. Nye in 1908 at Wellfleet, Mass./ Cream slip on red clay. Decoration: "United States."/ Oblong: 12 x 16.5 in." and in pencil in another hand, "(1965- on window ledge in the living room at "24"-W.C.G.)" and "(sold to W. T. Brandon 1966 W.C.G.)"
