Description:
Colanders are used to drain and sieve food, are found in a variety of bowl-shaped forms, some footed, some handled, and generally glazed on both the inside and outside. Unusual form; thrown, conical redware strainer with wide mouth and flat bottom, bottom of object has 12 pierced holes, pot has attached handle at side; 1/2 inch below the rim of the pot is an incised line which goes around the exterior, surface of the pot is glazed with mottled green color with orange spots, Condition: excellent condition, loss of glaze chip on rim, some glaze roughness on the handle, painted in red on the base of the object is the number "24" and "Col. in Conn." Presumed to be part of the Burton N. Gates Collection. Current attribution provided by American ceramics scholar Justin Thomas, 1/16/2019.
