Description:
Locked wooden artist or painter's box, probably dating to the late 1850s. An accompanying receipt (2012.39.2) that is dated March 12, 1858, invoices Edward Wells Colton for "tuition for painting; " it is thought that both the receipt and the date relate to the box. The box contains a white ceramic tray with six compartments for mixing colors. The tray is marked on the back "WINSOR AND NEWTON./ LONDON" surrounding a mythical winged sea lion emblem. Also within the box are numerous rectangular paint bricks, all made by Winsor and Newton, including: "Rubenn [or Rubena] madder; yellow ochre; burnt carmine; warm sepia (2 bricks); india yellow; burnt umber; madder carmine; raw sienna; indian red; light red; pink madder (2 bricks); olive green; pale [illeg.] yellow; cadmium[?] yellow; and cadmium orange. Some of the bricks have been used. Bricks stamped on back "WINSOR & NEWTON/ RATHBONE PLACE." The bricks were each likely either originally lined in foil, or else the divided compartments to hold the bricks were lined in foil.
