Description: opera; stage design; forest clearing
Label Text: In a forest clearing near Kromy (Kronig), an angry mob seizes and humiliates several boyars and Streltsy police.
Like the act set in Poland, Musorgskii added this scene in the revised 1872 version. He based it on the historical fact that near Kromy the followers of the pretender defeated Ivan Shuiskii’s army in 1606. The scene in the opera features songs sung by a captive boyar, a holy fool, the monks Varlaam and Missail, as well as the pretender’s procession and the crowd’s glorification of him. BJ
