Known for apocalyptic renderings of once-flourishing global sites, Motoda depicts this thriving section of Tokyo (imagine Times Square in New York) in the aftermath of some unspecified disaster. He pictures a time when civilizations have collapsed into ruins, evoking a thriving present that could, in a split second, become a dreadful future. The image resonates with Thomas Cole’s similarly fictionalized landscapes of past and present, displayed nearby. Unlike Cole's romanticized take on the present, Motoda's vision is a desperate place, bereft of life and color.
