Description: Plate, c. 1740, arms with supporters of Clifford of Chudleigh, Devon, England, probably made for Hugh, 4th Baron Clifford. Hugh, 3rd Baron Clifford of Chudleigh, a title originallly conferred on this branch of the family in 1672, married the beautiful and wealthy Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Edward Blount of Blagden. He only survived his father by two years and when he died at an early age in 1632, his son Hugh succeeded as a minor; the latter did not marry until 1749. It was possible that this service could have been made for his coming of age in 1746 or possibly earlier. Like so many Chinese services it seems probable that it was stored away in the Victorian period and sold early in the 20th century. The present Lord Clifford has purchased much of this service back for the family's country house dining room at Ugbrooke in Devon. Flower sprays in the Yongzheng style.
