Description: Pieced, monochromatic (sepia or brown) copperplate-printed coverlet fragment depicting English actors in Shakespearean roles. The design consists of roundel portraits of individual actors above which, in ribbon, is written their various roles. Includes "MRS ABINGTON IN COMED.../ HOLMAN, FALCONBRIDGE IN KINGSTOWN/ MR. KEMBLE...RICH'D III/ ARREN [AS?] OLIVIA IN TWELFTH NIGHT/ STATUE OF SHAKESPEARE WITH STARRS [sic]." Also depicted is an open book with the names of many of Shakespeare's plays. Included is "HAMLET/LEAR/OTHELLO/MACBE'T/ ROMEO & C./ WINTE/ TEMPE/ MERCH/ KJO [?]/ MUCH & C." Also "THE CLOUD CAPR TO THE GORGEOUS PALACE THE SOLEMN TEMPLE THE GREAT..." This kind of textile is referred to today as a toile, the french word for cloth, and usually connotes a monochromatic printed textile made of either plain weave cotton or else linen (warp) and cotton (weft). Poor condition. The donor ontained this textile from a yard sale in Manchester, Vermont, in the early 1960s, and could have been used in America at the end of the 18th century.
