Description:
In the foreground, a man wearing black robes and a black hat with a white cross on it sits garroted against a post on a raised platform, facing slightly to the proper right. His hands, bound at the wrists and resting on his lap, are closed around a small cross. A knife hangs on a string around his neck and he there is a sign affixed to his chest. His face is distorted, with eyes closed and tongue hanging out of his mouth. Behind and below the dead man is a large crowd of people seen from the chest up. Many faces are obscured but some wear pained expressions and one woman covers her face with both hands.
