Best remembered for his abstract watercolors, John Marin published this print in collaboration with his dealer, the gallery owner and photographer Alfred Stieglitz. Featuring New York City’s renowned Woolworth Building, Marin’s 1913 print celebrates the newly completed architectural icon of American modernity with fractured lines recalling French Cubism and German Expressionism. Stretching to the sky, the building stands like a cathedral of capitalism.

Marin and Stieglitz published two versions of the print. For the first, Marin used the standard technique for etching. For the second, of which this print is an example, the artist scratched directly into the plate to add darker drypoint accents, visible at the bottom of the composition.
