Description:Hide-covered rectangular trunk or box with hinged dome lid; the hide is possibly deer and is light tan in color. The trunk is ornamented with strips of dark brown leather and brass nails; in the front of the trunk there is an iron lock with tab and key; the leather strips along the opening of the trunk's lid are scalloped and serrated; the bottom of the box is plain wood; the interior of the trunk is lined with an early 19th-century wallpaper, perhaps dating to 1811-1817, it is colored white and reddish-orange and is designed in a geometric pattern of hatched diamonds; the trunk could possibly be the work of Moses Grant, cabinetmaker of Westfield, MA. If the wallpaper is original to the object, it provides a clue to assist in dating the object; the interior of the trunk is dirty and needs to be vacuumed out; there is a large crack in the animal hide starting at the lock and extending over the top of the domed lid; the animal hide has rubbed off in places, the darker brown leather are damaged in places .
