Description: Black and bright neon-colored front-facing portrait of 2 people.
Label Text: Excerpt from wall label, for the exhibition “The Unexpected Encounters of Looking Again,” November 28 - March 15, 2007: Golub’s work is concerned with fundamental tensions, whether between the figure and the ground of the canvas, between the individual and the group within a work, or between the role of the artist and the larger society. The title and actions within Wasted Youth II might cause a viewer to assume that the two figures in this work would be teenagers, however, looking closely at the faces of the figures, particularly the male figure, reveals a mature adult face. This work challenges the viewer’s expectations by creating a disconnect between the title and the actual images. Golub’s commentary on aging, punks, and youth culture gone awry creates a beguiling image. - Rebecca Karp (M.A. '08)
