Description:
Jug of salt-glazed stoneware with cobalt blue decoration, made by David Dwight Wells (b. 1822) and Isaac Newton Wells (b.1830) (w.1854). The jug has an impressed mark, "D.D. & I.N. Wells/ Whately, Mass." After the death of Caleb Crafts on January 1, 1854, his son Edward Alonzo Crafts left the pottery operation and the two brothers, David Dwight Wells and Isaac N. Wells took over. Their marked stoneware products continued to offer standard items, including crocks, jugs, and butter pots. This partnership was the shortest union of Whately potters, lasting only about 1 year, as David D. Wells left for Boston, together with Austin Crafts, to become operators of Martin Crafts' store.
