The first Western-style zoo in Japan opened in Ueno in 1882. It first displayed native species, but by the end of the Meiji era, it housed animals from around the world. The zoo survived the Great Kanto- Earthquake unscathed; however, most of the animals were slaughtered during the Second World War. The zoo reopened in 1946 and was one of the most popular attractions for the residents of the city in the postwar era.
