Although Shinbashi Station was completed in 1872 and Ueno Station was finished in 1883, there was no direct rail service through the center of Tokyo throughout the Meiji era. Plans for a central rail terminus were first made in 1889, but construction did not begin until 1908, and Tokyo Station opened in 1914. The connection with Ueno was finally completed in 1925. The three-story station was built of brick, with large domes over the entrances at the north and south. The central entrance faced the Imperial Palace and was reserved for use by the emperor and his family.
