Kiyochika documented both of the fires that swept over the Low City in early 1881. Both prints of the fires were based on sketches. For the fire in the first month, he reworked an earlier composition. For the one in the second month, he drew the fire as it was burning the city. The flames and smoke are noteworthy for the absence of line; Kiyochika achieved tonal gradations by superimposing different colors.
