Ryōgoku Bridge, completed in 1659, was the second bridge to be constructed over the Sumida River and was frequently destroyed by floods and rebuilt. The bridge depicted here was the last wooden span, completed in 1875. Kiyochika shows the bridge from the eastern shore, looking over the “thousand stakes” that were driven into the banks to prevent erosion. He skillfully uses vanishing-point perspective and has adapted watercolor effects to the woodblock print medium.
