Label Text:
Christopher Wilmarth produced only 150 sculptures during his life, which was cut short by his tragic suicide at the age of 44. His works recall the vocabulary of skyscrapers, although his true medium was light. Gnomon’s Parade (Late) is part of a series of sculptures referencing the gnomon, the vertical element of a sundial that casts the shadow used to tell time. The robust weight and density of construction steel contrasts the ephemeral light captured in icy, blue-green glass. Wilmarth used his materials the way a poet uses words, creating sculptural metaphors for heaven and earth, the fleeting and the permanent, life and death.
