Description:
English Staffordshire miniature children's or toy teaset decorated with romantic-style, light blue transfers prints of a large turreted building in the background, river, and people standing in a garden setting with a large urn on the left in the foreground. The set includes a teapot and cover (spout broken), sugar bowl and cover, six U-shaped teacups with flared rims, and five deep saucers (one missing - originally 6). There is a blue "8" and impressed "G" on the underside of the saucers, and a blue "18" on the underside of the sugar bowl. The "G" may be from one of the various partnerships/potteries of the Godwin family, such as that of the brothers, John and Robert Godwin (working 1834-1866), which produced many printed toy tea services, or Thomas Godwin (working 1834-1854). This scene is similar to printed scenes of Windsor Castle used by other potteries such as James & Ralph Clews, Ralph Stevenson, etc. Part of a set of 14, however 13 pieces survive (one saucer missing).
