Description:
Letter from Ralph Earl (1751-1801) to Dr. Joseph Turnbull (1756-1824) while both were living in London, which came with Earl's portrait of Trumball (HD 56.195.1). The letter reads: "Winsdsor Thursday 23 Sept / Dear Sir / I have received both your letters / the reason why I did not anser the first / is because I was coming to London this day / had I not received your letter earley this Morning finding You was likely to Stay / five or six days longer, I have put it off till / Saturday, which evening I will call on You / on Sunday. You must appear with me earley in the morning to proceed to business and to dine with me if you posebly can - / I was much alarmed at Your first letter / by Your starting off to American in such a hurey / I was or I am under constant feeris and apprehentions / that your lookes may some day or other prove / fatiol to You) / I have applyed Your love to the / Misses Daltons and they have returned theirs / to you in ballonce) I made your Com[pliments] to Mr West / I have finished the large picture, and lately / finished another and half done a thirde the picture / which I have begun and finished scince you was / heir is the best that eaver I painted, I intend to / offer it to Copley to coppey for his improvement / I am Sir Your most &c / R Earl / I shall either call on you at two o'clock / or Seaven O'Clock on Saturday0 day after tomorrow / both the Mr. Wests desires to be remembered to you / and wish you a plesont and a safe passaj."
