Description:
left and right panels of a vertical ōban triptych; the central panel is missing; musha-e; nishiki-e

Label Text:
The left panel is signed "Ichimōsai Yoshitora ga" ('drawn by Ichimōsai Yoshitora') within a red gourd-shaped cartouche. The right panel bears the same markings at lower-right. The title of the print is indicated in the red cartouche at upper-right, and is accompanied by a narrative inscription in the blue cartouche, which describes the scene. The publisher's mark is visible at lower middle-right. The single nanushi seal of the censor is superimposed in the waves, to the upper-right of the artist's signature. It reads "Watari" and represents the censor Watanabe Shōemon, who sealed singly from the sixth lunar month of 1842 until the fifth intercalary month of 1846. His seal has been used as the basis for the dating of this work. -BB, 2014
