Description:
Jacquard woven coverlet in blue wool and white cotton. Floral pattern in the center, with a border of stars, eagles, clover, and masonic columns. Two edges are bound, the other two are selvages. In all four corners is woven the inscription "Agriculture & Manufactures are the foundation of our Independence, July 4, 1826." In the two upper corners, "GNRL LAFAYETTE" is woven underneath this inscription.
"Gnrl Lafayette" likely refers to the United States tour of the Marquis de Lafayette, a French Revolutionary war general, to the United States. The visit lasted from about 1824 to 1826. The pattern itself is very similar to several other coverlet patterns from New York State, but is differentiated both by the addition of "Gnrl Lafayette" and addition of 3 small figues in the border. These include a monkey and goat flanking the eagles in the border and a small man at the foot of the Masonic columns.

Subjects:
Cotton; Wool
