This print is signed at middle-left "Gototei Kunisada ga" ('drawn by Gototei Kunisada'), accompanied by the circular kiwame seal of the censor. The seal of publisher Uemura Yohei can be seen on the raft. The actor and the scene are identified by the texts at top-right and top-left, respectively.
This series by Kunisada commemorates the seasonal farewell performance of actor Bandō Mitsugorō III before he left Edo for Osaka. This hengemono (a play in which one actor plays several different roles) premiered in the ninth lunar month of 1820 at the Nakamura-za in Edo under the title "Tsukiyuki Hana Nagori Buntai," and featured the actor in seven different roles, including a mochi-maker, a courtesan, and a monk on a pilgrimage. Since the premiere, a few of the dances have been adapted for solo performances and continue to be performed today, such as the "Asazume Bune" and the "Tama Usagi."
