During the last years of his life, the Russian constructivist sculptur, Naum Gabo, began to asemble sets of uniquely printed wood engravings. He had turned to this unusual graphic medium at the urging of William Ivins, then the print curator at the MET. Ivins provided Gabo withthe necessary printmaking tools and instructions and the artist quickly realized the potential of hte monoprint technique.
After carving sculptural designs on the surface of a wooden block, Gabo then inked each block individually to produce a number of color variations. He also used a variety of printing papers and, through subtle changes in pressure, explored a range of visual effects. The result was a series of prints where no two impressions are alike. THis print relates to an earlier Gabo sculpture from 1937, Bas-Relief on a Circular Surface.
