Description: ōban tate-e; kachō-ga; nishiki-e
Label Text: The title of this print appears in the yellow cartouche at upper-right; that of the series is printed in the blue cartouche, immediately to the right. This artist's signature is written vertically descending at middle-bottom and reads "Sūgakudō hitsu" ('drawn by Sūgakudō), with the accompanying artist's seal in red. At lower-left is the circular seal of the censor, which is a combination date-aratame seal identifying the date of inspection as the sixth lunar month of 1859 (Ansei 6). Beneath the censor's mark is a seal that marks this image as the tenth in the series and the mark of publisher Tsutaya Kichizō of the firm Kōeidō.
The writing at the top-center of the print reads "9 Incotcho" in Roman script and in hiragana. This was presumably added later, probably by a collector, and is an erroneous reading of the title and a misidentification of the serial number of the print.
Though he worked in several genres of ukiyo-e, Nakayama Sūgakudō is regarded as a master of kachō-ga, prints of birds and flowers. See MFA impressions: 11.17439, RES.54.188.33 - BB, 2014
