Description:
English creamware barrel-shaped mustard pot with a cover and tapering neck and base, which came with a spoon (HD 2006.33.72.2). Author and ceramic specialist Jonathan Rickard thinks that these mustard pots (HD 2006.33.72 and .73) may have been made by John Wood at Brownfields in Burslem and are listed in his inventory as 'marmalade pots." However, a "Round fluted [Mustard]' is illustrated in the Leeds Pattern Book, 83, although the "Barrel Mustard Pot" shown by the Whitehead Pattern Book as 133, without fluting, is closer in shape. The slightly-domed cover has a molded flower finial over engine-turned ribbing and a cut-out on the rim for a spoon. The pot has a plain top and base and a band of engine-turned vertical ribbing around the middle; an attached double entwined strap handle with floral terminals; and flat molded foot.

Subjects:
Pottery; glaze (coating by location)
