Description:
Leather belt, with a metal buckle. Buckle is pattern 1851 brass U.S. eagle plate, rectangular with an eagle in a wreath "E. Pluribus Unum". Two leather sword sling straps hanging off belt, each with a punched hole in the end. Brass hook.
Belts of this kind were worn by both Union and Confederate officers during the American Civil War, although they were originally designed and made for the United States Army c. 1851. In the Union army, this specific buckle was used for all sword belts including those of musicians, non-commissioned officers, and the foot artillery.
