Description: A New and Correct Map of the British Colonies in North America Comprehending Eastern Canada with the Province of Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and the Government of Newfoundland: With the Adjacent States of New England, Vermont, New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey; Much of the geographical information depicted here dates from a 1775 English map by Robert Sayer and John Bennett. Laurie and Whittle acquired the plate of the earlier map and made some modifications, chief among them being the inclusion of a truncated state of Vermont. Despite Vermont’s admittance into the Union in 1791, the map continues to show part of New York’s earlier territorial claim. Only a portion of the plate was re-engraved, so Vermont appears stranded between New York and New England. Reissue of a map first published in 1775 by the London firm of Robert Sayer and John Bennett. Laurie and Whittle purchased the Sayer and Bennett business and altered numerous plates and published them in the 1790s. The map depicts eastern Canada as far north as Labrador, New England, New York, New Jersey, and eastern Pennsylvania.
