Description:
Homann, a German cartographic publisher, compiled this map from a variety of French and Dutch sources. He added little in the way of new geographical information, but made one significant change by prominently designating a broad swath of northern New England with the name “Almouchicosen.” This variant of an Abenaki word was first used by Samuel de Champlain (c. 1570-1635) in 1605 to label Native villages (Almouchiquois) in the area between Cape Cod and Maine’s Saco River. In the 1650s, Dutch mapmakers applied the name to a larger area, and Homann further expanded the place name’s significance.
