Description:
ca. late 19th or early 20th century plaster cast of a marble original dating to the Classical Period, ca. 447-432 BCE. According to the organizational system implemented by Ian Jenkins, this is a cast of block XLII from the north frieze of the Parthenon, located on the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. The Parthenon frieze depicts the Panathenaic procession held in honor of Athena, the patron goddess of Athens. On this block, horsemen appear riding in file; four riders are visible either in whole or in part. The figure to the far left wears a helmet, armor, and a cloak. The second figure from the left wears a cap with ear flaps. The figure in the foreground wears a loosely draped chamlys and raises his right arm. The original marble relief after which this cast is made is located at the British Museum in London, England.
