Description:
ca. late 19th or early 20th century plaster cast of a marble original dating to the Classical Period, ca. 447-432 BCE. According to the organizational system implemented by W.B. Dinsmoor and A. Michaelis, this is a cast of block IV from the west frieze of the Parthenon, located on the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. The Parthenon frieze depicts the Panathenaic procession held in honor of Athena, the patron goddess of Athens. On this block, three horses and male figures on horseback, facing to the left, are depicted. Two horsemen continue to process. The original marble relief after which this cast is made is located at the Acropolis Museum in Athens, Greece.
