The Egyptians believed that the dead needed sustenance and chose several ways to provide it in perpetuity. Actual food was the preferred offering, but substitutes could be depicted in art or spoken in prayers. Funerary equipment included an offering table decorated with hoped-for provisions and placed in an accessible part of the tomb where the living could come with gifts and recitations. Offering tables were made in the shape of the hieroglyph for the word “offer”—a woven mat topped by a loaf of bread.
