Description: from the Hitachi series ("Japan-- A Chapter of Image", published 1963)
Label Text: Three men stand on a busy thruway in a city. Two are youthful, standing tall and wearing business suits. The third is older and stooped over with a heavy bag on his back; he leans on a cane. All three look into the distance to the right outside of the picture frame, waiting in anticipation for the arrival of transportation. They are surrounded in the foreground and background by buildings, streaking lights, and the general blur of motion, giving the scene a sense of vibrating energy. The photographer, W. Eugene Smith, was best known for his picture essays, which narrated historic events through several carefully composed and sequenced images. With that in mind, one might think of this single photograph as an isolated paragraph in a longer story that the viewer must complete. (2018)
