Label Text:
Traditional European still-life painting often
depicts domestic abundance or personal wealth
symbolized by flowers, fruit, and items made of
gold, silver, fine porcelain or other rare materials,
many acquired by trade with other nations. Wealth
is indicated in this painting through objects
associated with intellectual and creative pursuits.
The designs on the woven cloth below the
elaborate setting are similar to northeastern Native
designs which also use a central element or figure
linked by smaller curved and interlinked designs.

When I encountered this painting in the Mead’s
collection, I immediately recalled musical texts by
Native composers found in the Collection of Native
American Literature, some of which are displayed
nearby. (Heid E. Erdrich, 2023)
