Description: allegory
Label Text: Daniel Chester French produced this maquette (or small-scale model) to create the large sculpture that appears on the left side of the elaborate memorial he designed honoring Richard Morris Hunt. A prominent late nineteenth-century American architect, Hunt was renowned for his Beaux Arts buildings, which adapted classical Greek principles and forms and integrated painting and sculpture. Personifying these combined arts, this maquette abounds in references to classical Greece. The woman’s frontal form evokes columns, whereas the deep folds of her robe echo columns’ vertical flutes. The god Dionysus from the Parthenon temple in Athens sits in miniature on her painter’s palette. At the memorial, Painting and Sculpture appears with a portrait bust of Hunt and "Architecture."
